PRP for knee osteoarthritis: why preparations differ

PRP is an autologous blood-derived treatment. Outcome depends on indication, osteoarthritis stage and the characteristics of the preparation actually injected.

Not one product

Systems differ in platelet concentration, total platelet dose, volume and leukocyte content.

Dose

Recent clinical literature suggests a dose-response relationship in some knee osteoarthritis studies.

Best indication

Benefit is generally more predictable in early-to-moderate osteoarthritis than in end-stage disease.

Current practice

Dr Stanovici uses the Arthrex ACP system for knee injections, generally as a single injection, with repetition considered mainly after a real but temporary response.
