Meniscus tear: when is surgery useful?

A repairable traumatic tear in a young patient is not the same biological problem as a degenerative medial meniscal tear in middle age.

Preserve when it can heal

The meniscus distributes load and contributes to stability. Repair is preferred when tissue quality and tear pattern give a reasonable chance of healing.

Degenerative tears

These often coexist with early osteoarthritis. Treating the MRI finding alone can produce disappointing results.

Root and radial tears

Some patterns substantially reduce meniscal function and require a different biomechanical discussion.

True locking

A persistently locked knee from a displaced tear is different from clicking or occasional catching.
